US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described Iran as the main architect and the main ‘troublemaker’ of instability in the Middle East. He made the comments while informing about the ongoing US discussions with Saudi Arabian officials regarding the threat of attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial ships in the crucial Bab al-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (July 22), the US Secretary of State said that the US has discussed the threat of attacks by the Houthi rebels on commercial ships in the Red Sea several times in the past week with Saudi Arabia. He noted that this is not a new threat, but such threats have been used in the past as well.

Rubio claimed that Iran is directly involved in the heart of this entire crisis. He said that whenever the main problem or the country causing unrest in the region is mentioned, Iran’s name will come up first.

Referring to Iran's support for various armed groups in the Middle East, the US Secretary of State also said that the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, various armed militia groups in Iraq and Hamas in Palestine - all of these are blatant examples of Iran's activities.

According to him, Iran is pouring its own money behind such terrorist organizations and those who create instability in the region, instead of spending money on the welfare of the general population of its own country.
