Security forces have arrested a young man suspected of killing Charlie Kirk, a right-wing political activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced this at a press conference on Friday (September 12) local time.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested on Thursday night in Washington County with the help of his father and a friend. He lived with his family in the area, which is about 400 kilometers from the city of Orem, Utah, and near Zion National Park. Robinson comes from a religious family of the Mormon community and is the eldest of three brothers.
He was in his third year of the ‘Electrical Apprenticeship Program’ at Dixie Technical College. Robinson was previously enrolled at Utah State University for one semester in 2021. He then left the institution and never returned.
Charlie Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA and one of the largest conservative youth movements in the United States, was a close confidant of Trump. He was shot and killed while giving a speech at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Video footage showed him suddenly falling to the stage, blood pouring from his neck. Authorities said Robinson used a powerful bolt-action rifle to fire from a rooftop about 200 yards from the university.
A clear motive for the killing is still unknown. However, Governor Cox said Robinson had become more politically active in recent years and had discussed Kirk's agenda with his family. However, his political affiliations were not found. He was also a registered independent voter.
Messages written on cartridges recovered from the scene have caught the attention of investigators. One read, "Hey, fascist! Catch me!" Another contained the words “Bella Chao, Bella Chao, Bella Chao Chao Chao”—an Italian anti-fascist song from World War II. Other cartridges also contained symbols of online gaming culture.
The FBI also said that the possible motive behind Kirk’s murder was that Tyler Robinson, 22, told his family just a day before the shooting that he disliked Kirk because he “sent hate.”
Charlie Kirk was known for his role in strengthening conservative political positions among young people. He also played a key role in rallying young voters for Trump in the last election. However, his hard-line stances on race, gender, and gun ownership made him a politically divisive figure.
