A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the United States and Iran has been officially signed to end a conflict that has been going on for more than 100 days. US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed it electronically. Both sides claim that the agreement has already come into effect. Under it, the war has stopped, the Strait of Hormuz has reopened and the path has been paved for new talks on Iran's nuclear program.

Al Jazeera reports that President Donald Trump and President Masoud Pezeshkian have electronically signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end Iran's ongoing war with the United States and Israel. Both sides said that the agreement has already come into effect. According to US officials, it will not allow Iran to develop or acquire nuclear weapons, will end the war on all fronts and will reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai also confirmed that the memorandum of understanding with the US had been finalized and that both sides had signed it electronically. He said the agreement had already come into effect.

“The Islamabad memorandum of understanding has been finalized with the signatures of the presidents of both countries. Now it is time to check the implementation of the agreement,” Baghai told state news agency IRNA.

Al Jazeera reports that Wednesday’s announcement (June 17) is being seen as a formal confirmation of the suspension of military activities between the US and Iran. This will pave the way for future talks. Since both sides signed the agreement electronically, there will be no signing ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday as previously planned, Baghai said.

However, the negotiating teams from the two countries are still planning to travel to Geneva. A decision on whether to hold a face-to-face meeting could be made in the next few hours. That plan has been put on hold for now.

Meanwhile, although US President Donald Trump's office has not yet issued an official statement, Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna reported that a White House spokesman confirmed the signing of the agreement earlier in the day. However, according to Hanna, the memorandum of understanding could face political backlash within the United States. Because Trump was under pressure from hard-right circles to take a tough stance against Iran.

He said, "There is dissatisfaction with the aspects of the MOU that have been made public so far. Even some Republicans believe that excessive flexibility has been shown towards Iran."

Hanna also said that the Trump administration is trying to emphasize that this is not a final agreement, but the basis for further negotiations. In his words, "The administration is trying to convince the American people and politicians that this is not a defeat for the United States.
