Spain wins another FIFA World Cup, defeating the champions

Spain can officially claim the title of ' King/Queen Slayer '. Why not? The team won the World Cup in 2026, defeating defending champions Argentina. Less than two months after that success, the team achieved the same feat once again.  The team defeated defending champions North Korea in the final of the Women's U-20 World Cup. 

Spain, the champions of the women's World Cup, are also the champions of the men's World Cup. This time, the team has also asserted its superiority in age-based football. Spain won the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup title in Poland. In the final held in Warsaw, they defeated defending champion North Korea in a tiebreaker.

Neither team scored a goal. The match went to a tiebreaker, where Spain goalkeeper Laia Lopez became the hero by saving two shots. Spain's young team, known as La Rojita, defeated defending champions North Korea to win the Under-20 World Cup for the second time. Before that, they won the title in Costa Rica in 2022. The Koreans won the title.

In the tiebreaker, Lopez first blocked a shot by Choi Yeon-R. Finally, he blocked a shot by Pak Il-Sim. This is Spain's second consecutive World Cup. In July, the Spanish men's national team won the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Many of the players on the field also played in the 2024 U-17 Women's World Cup final in the Dominican Republic, where North Korea won 4-3 on penalties. Spain avenged that defeat. Lopez's two saves cemented Spain's long-standing dominance in women's football.
