Toshisuke Kanazawa started exercising to encourage his long-suffering wife. At the age of 90, this Japanese competitor has made waves by participating in a bodybuilding competition.

Last month, a day before his 90th birthday, he won the over-85 category at the Japan Masters Bodybuilding Championships. This is his 19th national title.

Sitting at his gym in Hiroshima, Kanazawa said this is not his last title. He still exercises for an average of two hours, six days a week, to keep fit.

However, as he gets older, Kanazawa has changed his exercise routine. Now, instead of lifting heavy weights, he uses machines.

Born in 1936, Kanazawa was a good swimmer in school. He was skilled in the 1,500-meter freestyle. But his dream of participating in the Olympics was not fulfilled due to muscle problems. He then decided to become a bodybuilder.

Kanazawa became Mr. Japan for the first time at the age of 24. He won the title again three years later. In 1967, he participated in the Mr. Universe competition in Montreal, Canada. The same competition was also attended by famous American actor and former bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kanazawa came fourth. Even after passing the age of 80, he won the World Masters Championship six times.

Although he had been involved in bodybuilding since childhood, he retired from bodybuilding for a time. However, Kanazawa returned to competition at the age of 50.

Kanazawa said he doesn't think he has to give up everything as he gets older.
