Cristiano Ronaldo has faced fresh questions over his decision to keep his marriage to Georgina Rodriguez a secret. A Portuguese television presenter has claimed that his family members may not have received any advance notice about the event.
The couple's marriage certificate shows that Ronaldo's mother Dolores Aveiro and his siblings Hugo, Elma and Katia were not present at the wedding of Ronaldo and Rodriguez at their home in Cascais on August 11. The claim came after the information was released. The private wedding was attended by only four witnesses and the couple's five children.
According to 'The Sun', Portuguese presenter Cristina Ferreira made this sensational claim while discussing the absence of Ronaldo's family on the TVI channel's program 'Dois As Dej'. "It would cause a lot of problems, because the family was not there," he said. He then suggested that they may not have known about the wedding until the moment it started.
Ferreira said, "Maybe they shouldn't have known. Or if they did, it was only 30 seconds ago."
However, Ferreira's comments were just a claim, not confirmed by Ronaldo or his family. His co-host Claudio Ramos urged caution in drawing conclusions from content seen on social media.
Ramos said, "I really hope that what we have said here, based on what we have seen on social media, does not cause real sadness in the family. Hopefully, things may not be as they appear."
The claim came after the Jornal de Noticias newspaper obtained and published the couple's marriage certificate, which is the first detailed account of who was actually present at the ceremony.
The document also names Ronaldo's longtime friend Miguel Paixao, Georgina's sister Ivana Rodriguez, and Spanish jeweler José Rodriguez Sangil and his wife Monica Gonzalez Martinez. All four were witnesses to the ceremony. Ronaldo's mother and three siblings were not on the list.
This absence is particularly striking because Dolores publicly supported Ronaldo and Rodriguez's marriage after it was announced. She responded with a heart to her son's Instagram post with a photo of him wearing a wedding ring.
So there is no clear indication of Dolores's objection to the marriage. However, the presenter's comments raise a different possibility. That is, the ceremony was so tightly planned that Ronaldo's family may have found out about it at the last minute.
Ronaldo and Rodriguez tied the knot at their mansion in the upscale Quinta da Marina area of Cascais at 1:30 p.m. on August 11. A registrar flew in from Porto to officiate the ceremony.
The couple had previously given little public information about their plans. Even hundreds of fans and journalists had gathered at Madeira's Funchal Cathedral, where rumours had spread that Ronaldo would be getting married.
However, the couple actually got married in a private ceremony in Cascais and announced the news after the ceremony. They posted a picture of their wedding ring and wrote in the caption, "See Heart G."
