Brazilian footballer shot dead in his hometown

Brazilian footballer Filipe Diogo has been shot dead in his hometown in Sao Paulo. The 21-year-old forward played for Sao Bernardo FC, the third division of Brazilian football, in the Serie C. The footballer, nicknamed "Favela", grew up in the academies of Cruzeiro and Botafogo, one of Brazil's top clubs, before settling in Sao Bernardo.

According to Brazilian media reports, he was shot dead on the street on Tuesday after returning to his hometown of Ribeirao Preto on vacation. He was shot 10 times by a gunman. Later, Simeone was taken to the emergency care unit and doctors declared him dead. The cause of the murder is still unknown. Police are investigating the incident, as well as examining the crime scene.

After the incident, the club wrote on social media, “São Bernardo Football Club is deeply saddened by the news of the death of our athlete Filipe Diogo Bernardes Ferreira (Flipe Diogo). May God grant his family the strength to bear this difficult time.”

Diego’s local team, Villa Virginia, also paid tribute to him on social media. “His passing has left a void that has touched the hearts of all who knew him and admired his talent on the pitch. Our thoughts are with the favela family, his close friends and his countless fans in this moment of sadness,” the team wrote.

Diego joined São Bernardo last year and helped the club win promotion in his first season. He has made 18 appearances for the club, scoring four goals, including five this season.
