Mbappé Focused on World Cup Glory, Not Messi’s Goal Record

Kylian Mbappé insists lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy matters far more to him than surpassing Lionel Messi's scoring record, despite moving within one goal of the Argentine legend at the 2026 tournament.
The France captain scored twice in his side's 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, taking his overall World Cup tally to 18 goals—just one behind Messi's all-time record of 19. His brace also lifted him to six goals in the tournament, drawing level with the Argentine in the race for the Golden Boot.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Mbappé made it clear that individual milestones are not his priority.
"As I've said before, my objective is to go as far as possible," he told reporters. "Our goal is to reach the final on July 19 and come back here again. That's what we're focused on."
"We're here to win, and we're taking it one game at a time. Of course, the more goals you score, the higher you move on the scoring charts. That's nothing new."
The Real Madrid forward also dismissed suggestions that he is preoccupied with overtaking Messi's record.
"I'm sure Leo will score more goals as well, so I'm not thinking too much about that," Mbappé said. "My full focus is on our next opponents and how we can get closer to the final."
Reigning champions Argentina will face Cape Verde in the Round of 32, while France take on Paraguay for a place in the quarter-finals. If Les Bleus progress, they will meet either hosts Canada or Morocco in the last eight.
Paraguay booked their place in the Round of 16 after defeating Germany in a penalty shootout, relying on disciplined and resilient defending throughout the match. Mbappé acknowledged the challenge awaiting France and stressed the importance of proper preparation.
"We'll work even harder before the Paraguay match. There are still areas where we can improve," he said. "But overall, we're in a very positive place. We know we have the attacking quality to create chances and win against any team."
With France among the favourites to retain their place at the top of world football, Mbappé's message was clear: personal records can wait, but another World Cup title is the ultimate ambition.
