Mbappé Makes World Cup History with Unprecedented Knockout Record

Kylian Mbappé etched his name into World Cup history by becoming the first player ever to score 10 goals in the knockout stages of the tournament. The French superstar reached the landmark with a brace against Sweden, setting a record unmatched in the competition's 96-year history.
While many football greats finished their entire World Cup careers without reaching double digits in total goals, Mbappé has achieved the feat in knockout matches alone—and in just his third World Cup.
Before Mbappé, the record for most knockout-stage goals was jointly held by Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo Nazário, who each scored eight. The Real Madrid forward has now surpassed both, becoming the first player to hit double figures in World Cup knockout goals.
Mbappé first showcased his brilliance in the knockout rounds at the 2018 World Cup, scoring three goals. He netted twice in France's thrilling 4-3 victory over Argentina in the Round of 16 before becoming the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final with a goal against Croatia.
He was even more devastating at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring five knockout goals. Those included a brace against Poland in the Round of 16 and a memorable hat-trick against Argentina in one of the greatest World Cup finals ever played.
Adding his two goals against Sweden to those previous eight, Mbappé now stands alone with 10 World Cup knockout goals.
The magnitude of the achievement becomes even clearer when compared to other legends. Lionel Messi, who is playing in his sixth World Cup, has scored five knockout-stage goals—all of them coming in Qatar 2022. Before that tournament, he had failed to score in the knockout rounds across his first four World Cups. Cristiano Ronaldo, despite featuring in six World Cups, has yet to score a single knockout-stage goal.
The rivalry between Messi and Mbappé is once again one of the defining storylines of this World Cup. Thanks to his brace against Sweden, Mbappé has drawn level with Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
After failing to score against Norway, the French captain has responded emphatically, scoring two goals in each of his last three matches. He now has six goals and two assists in the tournament.
Mbappé has also closed the gap in the all-time World Cup scoring charts. Messi leads with 19 goals in 29 matches, while Mbappé is just one behind with 18 goals from only 18 appearances. Given his remarkable form, the French forward could overtake Messi before the tournament concludes, adding yet another historic milestone to his already extraordinary World Cup career.
