France continued their irresistible march at the World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden, securing a place in the Round of 16 against Paraguay. After scoring 10 goals in three group-stage matches, Didier Deschamps' side once again found the net three times, underlining why they are regarded as one of the tournament favourites.
Kylian Mbappé returned to his scoring best with another brace after drawing a blank in the previous match. It was the French captain's third two-goal performance of the tournament, taking him level with Lionel Messi on six goals. However, Mbappé now leads the Golden Boot race thanks to his two assists against Norway.
Sweden, lined up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, struggled to contain France from the outset. Mbappé thought he had opened the scoring in the 21st minute after latching onto a brilliant through ball from Michael Olise, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Nine minutes later, Sweden goalkeeper denied Adrien Rabiot with a fine save from long range.
Mbappé then endured a rare miss in the 32nd minute, striking the post with an open goal at his mercy. Four minutes later, Olise came agonisingly close to producing one of the goals of the tournament, his spectacular overhead kick crashing against the right post.
France's pressure finally paid off just before half-time. Receiving a pass from Ousmane Dembélé on the edge of the box, Mbappé unleashed his trademark finish to give Les Bleus a deserved lead. After scoring, the French captain ran straight to embrace head coach Didier Deschamps, who had lost his mother shortly before the tournament.
Sweden had a golden chance to equalise in first-half stoppage time when Elliot Stroud found himself in a promising position on the counterattack, but he fired wide of the target.
France stepped up another gear after the restart. In the 53rd minute, Bradley Barcola doubled the advantage with a composed low finish from near the penalty spot after being picked out by Olise.
Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were extinguished in the 74th minute. Olise produced another moment of brilliance, weaving past three defenders before finding Mbappé, who controlled the ball superbly and curled a clinical finish into the far corner to seal a 3-0 victory. When he was substituted in the 85th minute, Deschamps' respectful nod towards his captain reflected just how influential Mbappé had been once again.
Although Mbappé grabbed the headlines with his brace, Michael Olise was arguably France's creative heartbeat throughout the match. The Bayern Munich playmaker orchestrated almost every dangerous attack and finished with two assists, taking his tournament-leading tally to five.
The two goals also brought Mbappé to 18 World Cup goals, leaving him just one behind Lionel Messi's all-time record of 19. Remarkably, the Real Madrid forward has scored nine goals in his last five World Cup matches.
Mbappé also reached another historic milestone, becoming the first player in World Cup history to score 10 goals in knockout matches. The previous record of eight had been shared by Brazilian greats Leônidas and Ronaldo Nazário.
France will now face surprise package Paraguay in the Round of 16 after the South American side stunned Germany to book their place in the knockout stage.
