After facing scrutiny following a disappointing display against DR Congo national football team in Portugal's opening World Cup match, questions were even raised about whether the veteran forward still deserved a place in the starting lineup. Ronaldo answered those doubts emphatically on Tuesday night in Houston.

The 41-year-old scored twice as Portugal national football team crushed Uzbekistan national football team 5-0 in a Group K encounter, helping his side secure their first win of the tournament while rewriting the record books once again.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, meeting a pinpoint cross from João Cancelo with a clinical right-footed finish at the near post.

He struck again in the 39th minute after latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Bruno Fernandes. Despite pressure from the advancing goalkeeper, Ronaldo calmly guided his shot into the far corner to double his tally.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner could easily have completed a hat-trick, but ultimately left the field with two goals, a dominant team victory, and six remarkable records added to his extraordinary résumé.

Six Records Ronaldo Set Against Uzbekistan

First player to score in six different World Cups

Ronaldo became the first footballer in history to score in six separate FIFA World Cups — 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. His long-time rival Lionel Messi has scored in five editions.

Goals in 11 major international tournaments

Combining FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships, Ronaldo has now scored in 11 major international tournaments. Already the record holder, he extended his own mark even further.

Among European players, no one comes close. Football legends such as Jürgen Klinsmann, Miroslav Klose and Xherdan Shaqiri have scored in six major tournaments.

Second-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history

At 41 years and 138 days, Ronaldo became the second-oldest goalscorer ever at a World Cup. Only Roger Milla, who scored at 42 years and 39 days, remains ahead of him.

He is now also the oldest European player to score in a major international tournament.

Portugal’s all-time leading World Cup scorer

His second goal took him past Portuguese icon Eusébio as Portugal’s outright leading scorer in World Cup history.

Ronaldo now has 10 World Cup goals in 24 appearances. His previous World Cup goals came once in 2006, once in 2010, once in 2014, four times in 2018 — including a memorable hat-trick against Spain — and once in 2022.

Oldest player to score a World Cup brace

Ronaldo also became the oldest player ever to score two goals in a single World Cup match.

In doing so, he surpassed Messi, who had set the previous mark only a day earlier after scoring twice against Austria at the age of 38 years and 363 days.

Youngest and oldest World Cup scorer for Portugal

Ronaldo became only the third player in World Cup history, among nations with multiple World Cup scorers, to be both his country's youngest and oldest World Cup goalscorer.

Before him, only Michael Laudrup and Messi had achieved the feat for their respective nations.

Ronaldo's first World Cup goal came during the 2006 tournament against Iran from the penalty spot when he was just 21 years and 132 days old. Two decades later, he continues to make history on football's biggest stage.

For a player whose career has been defined by breaking records and defying expectations, Tuesday's performance was another reminder that Ronaldo remains one of football's most enduring and influential figures.
