Oscar-winning American actor and director Robert Redford is no more. He breathed his last in his sleep at his home in Provo, USA, on Tuesday morning. He was 89 years old at the time of his death. Redford's spokesman confirmed the news to The New York Times.
Redford solidified his position in the acting world by starring in the play 'Barefoot in the Park' in 1963. He became even more popular when the play was made into a film in 1967. He became one of the top heroes of Hollywood in the 1970s. The Sting, released in 1973, earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor.
He also had equal success as a director. In 1980, he won the Oscar for best director for directing Ordinary People. At the same time, the film also won the award for best picture of the year. In 1994, he was nominated again for directing Quiz Show.
In 1985, he starred in the film Out of Africa. The film won seven Oscars, including Best Picture. He later announced his retirement after starring in The Old Man and the Gun.
Redford was not only known for his acting or directing, but also as a patron of independent films. He was the founder of the Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the United States. His goal was to create a platform for filmmakers outside the mainstream. In an interview with the Associated Press in 2018, he said, “Mainstream cinema controlled everything at the time. But there were so many other stories outside. I thought it would be good to give them a chance. Looking back now, I consider it my greatest achievement.”
He has been honored with numerous awards in his long career. He received an honorary Oscar in 2002. In addition, he has three Golden Globes, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
