An unidentified missile has struck a crude oil tanker about 4 nautical miles east of the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Saturday.
According to UKMTO, the tanker's master said the projectile hit the ship's port side. All crew members were safe in the attack. However, a warning has been issued around the strait following the incident.
There have been no reports of any oil spills or environmental damage in the incident so far. It was not immediately known who was responsible for the projectiles used in the attack or where they came from.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of commercial ships sailing near the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier on Friday, another oil tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire and a brief power outage on the ship.
The fire was later brought under control and the ship was able to continue its journey. There were no reports of casualties or environmental damage.
The UKMTO said both incidents were under investigation and advised ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
