Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the United States and the European Union (EU) of delaying new sanctions against Russia. According to him, the West should prioritize Ukraine's current needs, not its own future interests.Kiev's Western allies have imposed tough sanctions on Moscow since the war began in 2022. The EU has already imposed 18 sanctions and is discussing new measures. However, since Donald Trump returned to power, Washington has been taking a cautious approach to breaking the cold spell with Moscow. However, Trump has warned that he may go down the path of new sanctions if the war continues.
In an interview with Sky News, Zelensky said that all countries should think about the current situation in Ukraine, not about their own future.
He also complained that delaying sanctions for fear of a possible Russian response is "extremely dangerous".
Zelensky said what we lack now is a strong sanctions package from the United States.
Russia has consistently said that Western sanctions have failed to weaken its economy and will ultimately backfire.
Moscow says that the conditions for a peace deal are that Ukraine cannot join NATO, must reduce its military strength and accept border changes.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he agreed in principle to meet with Zelensky and invited him to Moscow. But Kiev rejected that as “deliberately unacceptable.”
