Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the eastern Indian state of Manipur after more than two years of unrest. Addressing a public meeting there, Mr. Modi promised to restore complete peace to the state.

Addressing a meeting organized in Churachandpur, Manipur, he said on Saturday, "We want to make Manipur a symbol of peace and prosperity."

"I promise you today. I am with you. The government is working to restore the status quo and bring peace to Manipur."

Incidentally, communal violence had spread in Manipur since May 2023. Since then, 28 months have passed.
The opposition parties have also repeatedly questioned why the Prime Minister did not visit Manipur. The residents of Manipur have also been seen expressing anger over this.

The Prime Minister is on a five-state tour. His schedule includes Mizoram and Manipur on Saturday. He is scheduled to visit Assam, West Bengal and Bihar in the coming days. A tight security cordon had been put in place before the visit to Manipur. .

After completing his Mizoram program on Saturday, he had two programs in Imphal and Churachandpur in Manipur. Prime Minister Modi attended the rally after meeting people made homeless due to unrest in Churachandpur, a Kuki-dominated area.

The Prime Minister and Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who was present at the public meeting, repeatedly spoke about the diverse culture and heritage of the state and the overall development of Manipur.
Governor Bhalla said that the government is focusing on the development of this border area as well as on security. Along with the development of health, education and communication systems, the government is focusing on women's welfare projects. Incidentally, several allegations of violence against women have come to light in troubled Manipur. There has also been a stir across the country.

Mr. Modi emphasized that the government gives priority to Manipur. The Prime Minister said, "There was a time when development projects were announced in Delhi but it would take decades for them to reach Manipur. But now it is not like that anymore."

The fiery situation in Manipur was also mentioned in his speech. Mr. Modi said, "Manipur is a land of hope and ambition. But unfortunately, this beautiful region has been overshadowed by violence."

"I met the affected people who are in relief camps some time ago. After meeting them, I can confidently say that a new dawn of hope and faith is about to dawn in Manipur."

Then the topic of restoring peace came up in his speech. Mr. Modi said, "Peace is necessary for development. In the last few years, many conflicts have ended in the North East and people have given priority to development."

"(In Manipur) talks have started for reconciliation between the people of different tribes in the hills and valleys. The work of restoring peace is going on."

"I request all the organizations, to fulfill your dreams, you should choose the path of peace. Ensure the future of the children."

He also said that he was not unaware of the problems of the youth community in Manipur. The Prime Minister has repeatedly emphasized that the government is determined to normalize the public life in Manipur, return the displaced, arrange their accommodation and establish peace.

After the meeting in Churachandpur, he went to the Imphal Valley. This region is inhabited by Meitei. There too, he met the homeless and asked about their situation. He laid the foundation stone of several development projects.

Later, he said at a public meeting, "Before 2014, the development rate of Manipur was less than one percent. But now its speed has increased several times. Development is happening in rural and urban areas here."

While speaking at a public meeting in Imphal, he somewhat 'indicatively' brought up the topic of Nepal. Congratulating Sushila Karki on taking charge of the interim government of that country as Prime Minister, he mentioned the youth community.

The Prime Minister said, "For the last two-three days, the youth community has been seen cleaning the roads of Nepal. This is a positive and bright sign of the future."

After that, he also emphasized the important role that the youth community of Manipur can play in India's development. After the unrest, Home Minister Amit Shah went to Manipur, but Prime Minister Modi did not. On the one hand, opposition parties have targeted the BJP, while local people have also expressed anger.

Recently, people from the Kuki and Meitei tribes have taken to the streets several times to demand peace in Manipur. Women have taken to the streets with torches, and human rights activists and members of student organizations have also taken to the streets.

The state has been repeatedly troubled in the last two years. Political unrest has reached its peak, and ministers' houses have been attacked. Amid political allegations and counter-allegations, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned and President's rule has been imposed in Manipur.

Incidentally, Churachandpur district is one of the areas most affected by the violence. More than 250 people have died here and thousands have been displaced.
