A powerful storm has caused widespread damage in the southern Brazilian city of Maringa. The storm, which swept through the country early Monday (November 2), uprooted numerous trees and power poles, disrupting road traffic and leaving thousands of people without power.

The Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (CeMepar) reported that the maximum wind speed during the storm reached 81 kilometers per hour. In addition, 39.8 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the city from midnight to 6:15 a.m.

Trees uprooted by the storm fell on the road, blocking traffic. Parked cars were damaged by these trees. Trees even crashed into the wall of a church.

Several buildings, roofs, traffic signals and a gas station were also damaged. The city's fire service headquarters was also among the structures damaged by the storm.

To deal with the situation, Maringa Mayor Silvio Barros declared a state of emergency, allowing for rapid assistance and emergency operations for affected residents.

Members of the municipality's Infrastructure and Urban Maintenance Department and the Civil Defense Force have already been deployed to the field. They are working to remove uprooted trees from the road, normalize traffic, and assess the extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, authorities have warned residents in the wake of the storm, urging them to stay away from uprooted trees and damaged power lines, as there is a risk of electrocution from these lines.

The storm has not only affected Maringa, but also several other municipalities in the state of Paraná. In these areas, houses have been damaged and electricity supplies have also been disrupted.

Authorities said rescue and rehabilitation efforts are continuing to assess the extent of storm damage and normalize the situation.
