At least 21 people have been killed in a horrific road accident in South Africa's Western Cape province.

The accident occurred on Sunday night (September 13) when two minibus taxis and a station wagon collided on the N-1 highway between Prince Albert and Liu-Gamka. 

Rescue operations began at the scene after the clash around 11:30 pm. Initially, 18 people were reported dead and three seriously injured, but the death toll later rose to 21.

Traffic on that section of the N-1 highway was closed in both directions after the accident. Emergency services were on the scene conducting rescue and necessary operations.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. The matter is being investigated by the relevant authorities.
