North Korea tests ballistic missile off east coast

North Korea has fired another missile into the sea, a day after the United States, South Korea and Japan concluded joint military exercises, sparking fresh fears on the Korean peninsula.

South Korea's military said North Korea fired several ballistic missiles from the coastal city of Wonsan early Saturday. 

The missiles flew about 250 kilometers (155 miles) and landed in the sea. South Korea immediately doubled its border surveillance and is sharing information with the United States and Japan. It also called an emergency security meeting to investigate the incident.

The US military said the missile attack posed no immediate threat to itself or its allies, but reiterated its commitment to South Korea's security.

North Korea has been extremely angry over the large-scale naval exercises that South Korea, Japan and the United States have been conducting for several days. Their defense minister has already issued a stern warning that they will respond harshly to such provocations. 

Even before Trump offered talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, North Korea fired missiles in protest at these joint exercises. Pyongyang has always seen these military exercises by the United States and its allies as a pretext for an attack on its own country.
