‘20 years vs 4 months’ – Trump’s response to Iran war

The Trump administration has come under criticism for the escalation of the military conflict with Iran. In response to the criticism, US President Donald Trump has drawn on the history of old wars.

According to the US President, the current conflict is not as big as the long-lasting and bloody US wars of the past. The Iran war has not yet become as long or deadly as the Afghanistan or Iraq wars.

In a post on social media, Trump outlined the duration and death toll of several major US military operations, including Afghanistan and Iraq.

He wrote, ‘Afghanistan war – 20 years, 2,000 deaths. Iraq war – 9 years, 4,600 deaths.’ Then, referring to the Iran conflict, he mentioned, ‘Iran military conflict – 4 months, 18 deaths.’

According to Trump, the duration and death toll of the current conflict with Iran are much less compared to the long-term wars of the past. Therefore, he indicated that there is no room for overly critical criticism of this war.

However, Trump's comments have sparked a new debate. According to many, the success or failure of a war cannot be judged solely by the duration or number of casualties. They have called for equal importance to be given to the economic cost of the conflict, regional stability, civilian casualties, and long-term diplomatic impact.

Regarding the Iran war, Trump has said several times before that it will not become a protracted conflict like the Vietnam, Afghanistan, or Iraq wars and that the operation is being conducted to fulfill the strategic goals of the United States.
