A microlight aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed during a training flight in Uttar Pradesh, India. The aircraft crashed into a pond due to a mechanical fault after taking off from the Bamrauli air force base near Prayagraj in the state. However, the two pilots on board the aircraft are unharmed, police said. The Air Force and police have started an investigation to find out the cause of the accident.
Police said on Wednesday that a microlight aircraft encountered a mechanical fault during a routine training flight from the Bamrauli air force base near Prayagraj. It was later made a 'safe emergency landing' in an uninhabited area. There was no damage to civilians or any property.
The Indian Air Force said in a post on social media X, 'The aircraft developed a mechanical fault at 12:15 pm during a routine takeoff from the Bamrauli Air Force Station. It was later made to land safely in an uninhabited area.' The statement further said that both pilots on board the aircraft are safe and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
Local police officer Manish Shandilya said that the training aircraft crashed due to a sudden mechanical failure in the engine. He gave this information, citing the Press Trust of India.
Meanwhile, Indian media outlet NDTV reported that the two-seater microlight aircraft crashed into a pond behind KP College in Prayagraj city. This spread panic in the area. When local residents received the news, the fire service and rescue teams reached the spot. The administration has ensured security around the area.
Initially, clear information was not available about how many people were on board the aircraft, their condition and the exact cause of the accident. However, the Air Force later confirmed that both pilots are safe. A court of inquiry has been formed to determine the cause of the accident.
Earlier this month, a private aircraft made an emergency landing on its way from Bhubaneswar to Rourkela in Odisha. Six passengers were slightly injured in the incident, but all were out of danger. Police said the plane that crashed on Wednesday was heading towards the Fafmau and Sangam areas. It developed a sudden engine failure mid-air.
