Election Commission is taking all decisions under pressure from BNP: NCP to chief advisor.
The Election Commission is taking all decisions under pressure from BNP, said Nahid Islam, convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP). He made this known at a press conference after a meeting with the chief advisor at the State Guest House Jamuna at around 6 pm on Monday (January 19).
Nahid Islam said that the Election Commission is acting unilaterally on the issue of loan defaulters and dual citizenship. The Election Commission is moving away from its legal position under pressure from BNP and is working against reforms. It is giving loan defaulters and dual citizens a chance to vote under pressure from BNP. The Election Commission has taken a stand against reforms. It has taken a stand against the referendum. If the EC cannot maintain impartiality, we will have to take a stand against the Election Commission if necessary. However, we do not want a face-to-face position.
He said, "If the Election Commission cannot gain the trust of everyone, how can we expect a fair election? If the Election Commission thinks that there is only one party in the country, then they are wrong. If the EC continues to do this, we will be forced to enter the field. If the EC behaves in a biased manner, there will be doubts about the election. If the election is not fair, the responsibility will also fall on the chief advisor."
He said, the verdict has been given in favor of dual citizens and loan defaulters by misinterpreting the constitution. The EC has given such a verdict by creating a mob in front of the BNP and Chhatra Dal. We do not want dual citizens and loan defaulters to participate in the election. That is why we will go to court.
Referring to the return of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to the country, the NCP convener said, when Tarique Rahman came to the country, there were posters and banners with his picture all over Dhaka. No action was taken then. Various campaigns are being conducted in the name of Khaleda Zia's condolence meeting. We are concerned about the overall situation. Tarique Rahman said, I have a plan. The EC is an independent institution. Is Tarique Rahman's plan to control him? Is his plan to control the media?
The NCP delegation at the meeting included party spokesperson and Central Election Steering Committee Chairman Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and two other members of the party. Earlier, at around 5 pm on Monday, the NCP delegation led by party convener Nahid Islam entered the Jamuna.
