Australian media reported that the man was named as Ahmed Al Ahmed. A relative of his said that the 43-year-old fruit shop owner was also shot twice and underwent surgery.
More than 350,000 Australian dollars had been raised in a fund opened for Ahmed's treatment and support as of Monday afternoon (Australian local time).
Police said the attacker, Sajid, had held a valid firearms license since 2015. He had six licensed weapons. Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the accused father came to Australia on a student visa in 1998. The son is an Australian-born citizen.
