Many casualties in attack on Australia's Bondi Beach.
Gunmen opened fire indiscriminately in the Bondi Beach area of Sydney, Australia. At least 12 people, including the gunman, were killed and 29 people, including two police officers, were injured in the incident, according to local police. Law enforcement was able to arrest the gunman from the scene with gunshot wounds.
Police have declared an exclusion zone (restricted area) at the scene. Specialized equipment has been brought there to deactivate IEDs (improvised explosive devices). However, details about the extent of the exclusion zone have not been given.
Australian media outlet Nine News analyzed video footage from the scene and reported that two men began shooting from a bridge shortly before 7 pm local time on Sunday (December 14).
Police have urged the public to avoid the area after the incident. However, they have not yet officially announced the identity of the gunmen or the motive for the attack.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the Bondi Beach shooting as “tragic and deeply concerning.” In a statement, he said, “We are working with NSW (New South Wales) Police and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Police and emergency services are working at the scene to save lives.”
Albanes said he was in constant contact with the Australian Federal Police Commissioner and the NSW Premier following the shootings.
