The unarmed pedestrian grabbed the gunman from behind.

At least 12 people were killed and 29 others, including two police officers, were injured in a gun attack on Bondi Beach, Australia. The casualties occurred when two gunmen opened fire at random at approximately 6:30 pm local time. The heroic story of a brave pedestrian has gone viral on social media.

In the 15-second video posted on social media, an unarmed pedestrian was hiding behind a parked car after the shooting started. He then ran towards the gunman from behind. He grabbed him by the throat and snatched the gun. When the gunman fell to the ground, the brave man pointed the gun at him.

The concerned authorities believe that many lives have been saved by his bravery. However, the name and identity of this pedestrian have not yet been confirmed.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described the Bondi Beach shooting as “tragic and deeply concerning.” In a statement, he said, “We are working with NSW (New South Wales) Police and will update as more information becomes available. Police and emergency services are working at the scene to save lives.”

Albanes said he was in constant contact with the Australian Federal Police Commissioner and the NSW Premier after the shootings.

Meanwhile, journalist Daniel Robertson told Al Jazeera that the attack had caused widespread panic in Australia, noting that such shootings are extremely rare in Australia.

After the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, Australia enacted strict laws to prevent the spread of weapons. Since then, the country has seen few major shootings.

Robertson added that a large number of police have been deployed on the streets around Bondi Beach. Police are patrolling on foot and have advised the public to stay away from the area.
