Trump rejects Iran ceasefire proposal, what’s going to happen next?

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's offer of a seven-day ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Citing a report in The Wall Street Journal, anonymous US officials said Trump had rejected the proposal, hours after Iran presented a new roadmap to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for normal shipping.

According to Iran's proposal, the Strait of Hormuz was to be opened to normal maritime traffic within a week. In return, the United States was to release $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, lift sanctions on Iranian oil, and end the naval blockade of its ports. It was also to cease all hostilities, including in Lebanon. 

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that negotiations on a final agreement could begin on the seventh day if the conditions are met.

    However, there has been no official response from the US to the proposal. US officials have said that Washington does not want to rush into it and is in a favorable position. Although indirect talks between the two sides are still ongoing through Qatar and other mediators.

Analysts say the situation could turn into a new conflict. According to Wall Street, Trump has told his aides that he is considering new bombings or military action against Iran after the US midterm elections in November. 

Experts say Trump does not want to end the war on unfavorable terms and the future of the conflict depends on the outcome of the November election and the alignment of the US Congress.
