Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit the US next month. If this visit is made, it will be the first visit by Jinping in 11 years. This information has been revealed by several people familiar with the president's travel plans.
According to the report, Xi Jinping will arrive in the US on September 23, meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House on September 24 and leave the US the next day. This visit will be Xi Jinping's first visit to the US in 11 years.
Four people familiar with Xi's itinerary said, "Xi will not participate in the general debate of the UN General Assembly, which begins in New York on September 22."
The White House also confirmed that Xi will visit Washington on September 24 for talks with Trump. However, it did not comment on the rest of his trip.
The meeting is coming amid rising tensions between Washington and Beijing. The discussions are likely to cover important global issues including trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz.
It was previously thought that Xi could attend the UN General Assembly session alongside his visit to Washington. This would have given China an opportunity to showcase its support for multilateral international institutions and global governance.
However, a European Union diplomat in Washington said that China has not yet sent a delegation to New York. This suggests that Xi will not be attending the UN session this time.
Xi Jinping last attended the UN General Assembly session directly in 2015. At that time, he visited New York to participate in various events marking the 70th anniversary of the UN.
He addressed the General Assembly virtually during the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. According to analysts, Xi's absence from this year's session will reduce the scope for direct comparisons between China's position on international institutions and global issues and the Trump administration's foreign policy.
