The US virtual embassy has urged US citizens in Iran to leave the country immediately. In a security alert issued on Friday (February 6), the embassy said that if possible, they should leave Iran now and have a plan to leave the country that does not depend on US government assistance.

The alert said that additional security measures have been strengthened in Iran. There have been road closures, disruptions to public transportation and widespread problems with internet connections. The Iranian government has restricted access to mobile, landline and national internet networks. In addition, flights to and from Iran have been limited or canceled.

The US embassy also said that US citizens should be prepared for long-term internet outages and plan alternative communication systems. It has also been asked to consider leaving Iran by land via Armenia or Turkey if the situation is safe.

The alert noted that the risk of interrogation, arrest or detention of US citizens in Iran is significantly higher. Therefore, it has been advised to avoid protests or public gatherings and maintain a 'low profile' while taking maximum precautions.

In addition, those who are unable to leave the country for any reason have been instructed to take shelter in their own homes or other safe places. It has also been urged to stock up on adequate food, water, essential medicines and other emergency supplies.
