Energy security for India's 104 crore people will be the top priority and oil imports and sources will be selected based on this policy. This was said by Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. He said that while the source of imports is changed considering the market situation and the changing international situation, all India's decisions will be taken keeping in mind domestic needs and security.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump claimed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him that New Delhi will stop buying oil from Russia and buy oil from Venezuela as much as possible. After that, India's External Affairs Ministry gave these first official response on Thursday (February 5).

The announcement indicates that Trump's claim that India has 'compromised' to stop buying Russian oil as part of a larger trade deal. However, India has not yet accepted this claim and has not officially announced any such commitment.

The ministry also said that such decisions in India will be taken solely in the light of national interest and consumer safety and this policy will continue to be a guideline in the future.

Hindustan Times reported.
