Amid the ongoing protests and violent situation in Iran, the United States has issued an emergency warning for US citizens staying there. Washington has directly ordered its citizens to leave Iran due to the rapid deterioration of the situation in the country. At the same time, the Trump administration has also publicly considered various military and covert options on the Iran issue.
The Anadolu news agency says that the United States has warned US citizens staying there to leave the country immediately as the nationwide unrest in Iran has intensified. On Monday, the virtual US embassy in Iran said in a security alert, "Leave Iran now." The alert said that US citizens should plan to leave Iran without the assistance of the US government. If anyone is unable to leave the country, they are advised to take safe shelter inside their homes or in another safe building.
It also said that US citizens staying in Iran should be prepared for internet shutdowns and have alternative communication systems in place. If the situation is safe, they have been asked to consider leaving Iran by land via Armenia or Turkey.
The warning states that citizens who have both US and Iranian citizenship must leave Iran using their Iranian passports. Because Iran does not recognize dual citizenship and considers such people only as Iranian citizens. It has also been warned that showing a US passport or showing any evidence of any relationship with the United States may be grounds for detention by Iranian authorities.
Meanwhile, on Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that a 25 percent tariff will be imposed on any country doing business with Iran. This announcement comes in the context of a tough crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran.
Trump has been threatening military strikes if deadly force is used to suppress protests in Iran. However, at the same time, he is also keeping the possibility of diplomatic talks with Tehran open. According to various reports, Trump was briefed on various options for taking action against Iran on Monday, including not only conventional air strikes, but also other options.
The CBS News report said that these options include cyber operations and psychological operations. These could be planned to disrupt Iran's military command structure, communications systems and state media.
The report, citing two Pentagon officials, said that cyber and psychological operations could be carried out separately or together. However, a final decision on this matter has not yet been made. The report also said that Trump's national security team is expected to discuss updated options regarding Iran at the White House on Tuesday.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump said that his administration was closely monitoring the situation in Iran and was considering "some very tough options" as the death toll from the protests rose. "We will make a decision," he said. However, he did not provide any details on when, where or how the United States would take action.
