US President Donald Trump has said that there is a possibility of making huge money from massive investments in the oil sector in Venezuela. After meeting with top oil company executives at the White House on Friday (January 9), he said, “There is going to be a huge amount of money.”

While leaving the White House for the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump told reporters, “Today we had a great meeting with the largest companies in the world. They will invest hundreds of billions of dollars and go extract oil.” His comments indicate the US’s big economic plans around Venezuela’s vast oil resources.

Earlier, on the morning of January 3, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, First Lady Celia Flores, were detained in a US military operation. After the operation, they were taken out of the country and taken to the United States. They are currently facing trial there on drug and weapons charges. However, they have claimed their innocence in court.

Expressing optimism about Venezuela's future, Trump said, "What we have done, some would say it is almost a miracle. Venezuela is happy with it, I think everyone in South America will be happy."

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government announced on Friday that it would begin an "exploratory process" with the aim of restoring diplomatic relations with the United States. A statement said that this initiative is being taken within the framework of international law and in accordance with the principles of national sovereignty and peaceful diplomacy.

However, at the same time, Caracas strongly condemned the US military operation. The Venezuelan government called it a criminal, illegal and immoral aggression. They claim that the operation has killed more than 100 civilians and military personnel and violated international law.
