Man City Faces Potential Sanctions; Haaland’s Father Hints at Possible Departure

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Manchester City’s future, fresh discussions have emerged regarding Erling Haaland’s potential transfer. If the club faces severe penalties for alleged financial irregularities, the Norwegian striker could decide to leave. A hint to this effect has come from his father, Alf-Inge Haaland.
Manchester City faces 115 charges of breaching financial regulations, dating back to 2009. Although an independent commission is investigating these allegations, a final verdict on sanctions has yet to be reached. The football world is abuzz with speculation about potential penalties; should the club face severe consequences—such as a significant points deduction or relegation—it is believed that several of City’s star players might choose to depart.
When asked about Haaland’s future, his father, Alf-Inge, drew a parallel to a past case, noting, "Juventus also faced several allegations, including match-fixing. I believe we should wait for the outcome of the appeals process. A decision could arrive soon. That said, many—including rival fans, other clubs, and especially journalists—are eager to see the club face harsh punishment."
He added, "We must wait to see what the appeal process yields. City maintains that they possess strong evidence to prove their innocence. Therefore, it is best to wait until a final decision is reached."
Alf-Inge’s comments suggest that, for now, the focus remains on the final verdict of the case against City. If the club is cleared of wrongdoing, the situation will remain stable; however, should a severe penalty like relegation be imposed, Haaland’s future may need to be reconsidered.
Nevertheless, Alf-Inge does not appear overly concerned about his son’s career at this stage. "Erling simply wants to play as much football as he can," he remarked. "He is focused on his game. I suspect that we—those outside the pitch—are the ones dwelling on these matters more than he is."
Meanwhile, Haaland has maintained his prolific goal-scoring form this season, netting nine goals in his first nine Premier League appearances. However, he failed to find the back of the net in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton on home soil.
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Haaland, while Real Madrid are also said to be in the race to acquire him. The Manchester City goal machine finished eighth in the voting for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
