Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi unleashed a storm with the bat against New Zealand. Their destructive batting propelled India to a team total of 100 runs in just 5 overs—a new world record in T20 International cricket. Never before has a team reached the 100-run mark in so few deliveries in this format.

In the third T20I of the series against New Zealand in Christchurch on Tuesday (October 27), India’s opening pair adopted an aggressive approach from the very first ball while chasing a target of 199.

Abhishek Sharma raced to a half-century in just 15 balls. Bolstered by Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s explosive hitting, India reached the 50-run mark in a mere 2.2 overs, equalling the world record for the fastest team 50 in T20 International cricket. The Indian batting grew even more ferocious thereafter, reaching the 100-run milestone in just 30 balls—exactly 5 overs—to set a new world record.

Previously, this record was held by Romania, who reached 100 runs in 32 balls against Serbia in 2021. India has now shattered that record. Among Test-playing nations, the record for the fastest team century was previously held by South Africa, who reached 100 runs in 5.3 overs against the West Indies in 2023; India has now surpassed that mark as well. Furthermore, as Papua New Guinea (against Vanuatu in 2019) and Romania (against Serbia in 2021) had also reached 50 runs in 2.2 overs, India now shares that particular record.
