Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension following an altercation with Barcelona’s young star, Lamine Yamal. The Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) imposed the sanction, classifying the incident as a breach of discipline and an act of aggression.
According to a report by the Spanish outlet *Mundo Deportivo*, the ban was issued after Bernal received a straight red card during last Saturday’s match between Real Betis and Barcelona.
In the second half, tensions flared between players from both sides, centering on Barcelona midfielder Fermín López. Lamine Yamal stepped in to help defuse the situation, but he soon found himself in a confrontation with Bernal. At one point, Bernal struck Yamal with his head, prompting the referee to issue a straight red card and send him off the pitch.
The decision was based on the match report submitted by referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea and Article 103 of the Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Code. This article mandates penalties for physical assaults on opponents, regardless of whether the strike results in a serious injury.
The referee’s report states that in the 54th minute, Bernal was ordered to leave the field. While the ball was out of play, he placed his hands on an opponent’s neck and struck him in the face with his head twice in succession.
Under Article 103, such an offense carries a potential suspension ranging from four to 12 matches. Because the incident occurred while the ball was out of play, the Disciplinary Committee did not categorize it as a mere verbal altercation; instead, it was classified as a physical assault, resulting in a four-match ban—the minimum penalty under the regulations.
The incident originated early in the second half. When Barcelona midfielder Fermín López fell to the ground, Real Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles stepped forward to help him up. Lamine Yamal also moved in to support his teammate, which led to an argument between him and Bernal.
At one point, Bernal grabbed Yamal firmly, and then, while the two were face-to-face, the Betis midfielder struck Yamal with his head. Observing the incident, the referee immediately issued a red card, forcing Real Betis to play the remainder of the match with only 10 men.
Following this event, the disciplinary committee did not view the incident merely as a case of player frustration or a verbal altercation. The fact that Bernal delivered two consecutive headbutts while the ball was not in play became the decisive factor in determining his punishment.
