Taylor Swift is one of the most influential figures in global music. To mark the 20th anniversary of her debut album—released on October 24, 2006—the singer recently shared stories about her early struggles and eventual success in the music industry. In an interview with American media, she recounted various experiences from the beginning of her career.
Swift shared that at just 11 years old, she went from door to door to various record labels in Nashville, carrying a demo of karaoke tracks. At the time, however, no company offered her a contract. By age 14, she signed with Sony/ATV Publishing as a songwriter. Prior to this, she had a development deal with RCA, but she walked away after being told to wait another year for a full contract. She later joined Scott Borchetta’s new record label—a company that, at the time, had only 10 employees. Swift even helped stuff CDs into envelopes to be sent to radio stations to promote her music.
Swift revealed that "Our Song," a track from her debut album, was written for a school talent show when she was in the ninth grade; it took her only about 20 minutes to compose. That song eventually became her first number-one hit on the country music charts. She wrote "The Outside" at age 12, drawing from her experience of feeling isolated at school. Transforming personal emotions, rejection, and relationship experiences into songs has become a hallmark of Swift’s creative process. In the interview, she admitted that the pressures of the music industry can sometimes be overwhelming. Nevertheless, she expressed her determination to remain in the music business for another 20 years—while ensuring that she retains full control over her own career decisions.
