The highly anticipated clash in Toronto has been billed as a potential final World Cup meeting for two of football's greatest icons, with both Ronaldo and Modric nearing the end of their illustrious international careers.

However, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Dalic insisted the contest would be won in the middle of the park.

"I believe this will be a battle between the midfielders," Dalic said. "Portugal have outstanding players in midfield. They are tactically very strong, and in a match like this even a single mistake can prove very costly."

Croatia recovered impressively after opening their campaign with a defeat to England. They responded with a 1-0 victory over Panama before defeating Ghana 2-1 to secure their place in the knockout stage.

Portugal, meanwhile, reached the Round of 32 with one win and two draws in the group stage. Despite an inconsistent campaign so far, Dalic warned against underestimating Roberto Martínez's side.

"Portugal are a team that always want to dominate possession," he said. "They have very few weaknesses and can become extremely dangerous at any moment."

Croatia's midfield will once again be led by 40-year-old captain Luka Modric, alongside Martin Baturina, who scored against England, and Petar Sucic, who found the net in the victory over Ghana.

Portugal are expected to rely on the creativity of Vitinha, João Neves and Bruno Fernandes in midfield, although much of the spotlight remains firmly on 41-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Thursday's encounter will be the final World Cup match staged in Toronto during the tournament. It could also mark the last World Cup appearance for either Ronaldo or Modric, adding extra emotion to an already compelling fixture.

Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic paid tribute to both veterans ahead of the match.

"They have both made incredible contributions to football," Livakovic said. "I hope Luka's journey continues, but I have nothing but positive things to say about both of them."
