The Bosnians were eliminated after a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts the United States on Wednesday at Bay Area Stadium in San Francisco, bringing an end to their historic first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.

Competing in the expanded 48-team tournament, Bosnia reached the finals through the playoffs, where they produced one of the biggest upsets by eliminating former world champions Italy.

They then advanced from the group stage after drawing with co-hosts Canada, defeating Qatar and narrowly losing to Switzerland before booking a place in the Round of 32.

Despite the defeat to the United States, Barbarez was full of praise for his players.

"I am incredibly proud of my players," he said after the match. "This is something we should celebrate, not be sad about. That's life, that's football, especially in a tournament of this magnitude."

The Bosnia coach admitted his side struggled against the Americans, pointing to costly mistakes, an inability to make the most of possession and a lack of clear scoring opportunities as the key reasons behind their elimination.

Even so, he said the performance did nothing to diminish his pride in the team.

"We were two goals behind, but watching my players filled my heart with pride. It was an incredible feeling. Right now, I feel like the proudest coach in the world."

Barbarez is now looking forward to returning home, believing the reception awaiting the squad will underline the significance of their achievement.

"Video messages and phone calls are always nice," he said. "But once we return home and meet our people, we will truly understand how important this achievement has been."

Although Bosnia's World Cup journey has come to an end, their run to the knockout stage marked the country's best-ever performance at the tournament and provided plenty of optimism for the future.
