While he wears only “Haaland” at club level with Manchester City, his Norway shirt reads “Braut Haaland.” Naturally, many fans have wondered why the difference exists.

The answer lies in his family heritage. “Braut” is his mother’s surname. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, is a former Norwegian heptathlete, while his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, is a former professional footballer who also played for Manchester City.

By using “Braut Haaland” for the national team, the Norwegian striker is honouring both sides of his family—his father’s football legacy and his mother’s sporting background.

In Norway, it is not uncommon for athletes to carry both parental surnames, although not everyone follows this tradition. Haaland’s choice reflects a personal decision to highlight his roots and family identity.

Interestingly, this is not new in his career. Early in his professional journey at Red Bull Salzburg and later at Borussia Dortmund, he was widely known as “Erling Braut Haaland.” He later dropped “Braut” when moving to Manchester City, using only “Haaland” on his club shirt.

However, he brought back the full name for Norway in recent years, including at the World Cup. So while he continues to terrorize defences with his goals, Haaland is also using the global stage to quietly celebrate his family legacy.
