Portugal Under Pressure After Shock Draw as Ronaldo’s Form Faces

That result has put added pressure on Portugal ahead of their crucial Group-stage fixture against Uzbekistan national football team on Tuesday—a match seen not just as a fight for three points, but also as a test of character and recovery.
Much of the criticism after the first game has centred on captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old forward failed to score and looked largely ineffective throughout the match. With no goals in his last 10 major tournament appearances, renewed debate has emerged over his place in the starting XI.
Despite the criticism, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has strongly defended his captain. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, he said: “He is a great example for all of us. He constantly tries to improve himself and contribute to the team. He is our role model.”
However, Martínez refused to confirm whether Ronaldo will start against Uzbekistan, revealing that even the players have not yet been informed of the final lineup.
The coach remains optimistic that the disappointment from the opening draw could serve as motivation. “We were all frustrated after the match,” he said. “But that frustration can be the best possible start for our preparation for the next game.”
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan—competing in their first-ever World Cup—are far from an easy opponent. Despite losing narrowly to Colombia in their opening match, they showed strong resistance and determination.
With pressure mounting and expectations high, Portugal now face a crucial test to prove their credentials as genuine World Cup contenders.
