South Africa to Appeal Themba Zwane’s Three-Match Ban, Says Broos

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed his dissatisfaction with the three-match suspension handed to midfielder Themba Zwane at the FIFA World Cup, confirming that the team will appeal to FIFA in an effort to have the punishment reduced.
Zwane was shown a red card during South Africa’s opening match against Mexico. FIFA later described his conduct as "violent" and imposed an additional three-match suspension, ruling him out for the remainder of the group stage.
Speaking at a press conference, Broos argued that the punishment was excessively harsh compared to the nature of the incident. He insisted that the challenge did not warrant a red card in the first place.
The South African coach also referenced an incident involving Argentina captain Lionel Messi. Broos noted that a foul committed by Messi during Argentina’s match against Algeria was not reviewed by VAR, suggesting that similar situations had been treated differently.
“I do not want Messi to receive a red card,” Broos said. “He is one of the best players in the world. But the question is why similar incidents lead to different decisions.”
According to Broos, it was the Mexican player who initially held Zwane back, while the South African midfielder was merely trying to free himself. He described both the red card and the subsequent three-match suspension as unreasonable.
South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening World Cup fixture. The team finished the match with two players sent off, making an already difficult start to the tournament even more challenging.
