Egypt's search for a first-ever FIFA World Cup victory continued on Tuesday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Belgium despite leading at halftime.

Having played seven matches across three World Cup appearances without a win, Mohamed Salah's side looked set to break the unwanted streak after taking an early lead. However, an own goal in the second half denied the Pharaohs a historic victory.

Egypt opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Emam Ashour unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. The goal came from an assist by Salah and marked Ashour's first goal in international football.

The North African side carried their advantage into the break, setting another milestone. It was the first time Egypt had gone into halftime ahead in a World Cup match.

Belgium nearly found an equaliser in the 53rd minute, but Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick crashed against the post. The introduction of Romelu Lukaku later proved crucial as the striker helped shift momentum in Belgium's favour.

The equaliser arrived in the 66th minute when Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany, attempting to stop Lukaku inside the box, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. The own goal brought Belgium level at 1-1.

Neither side could find a winner in the remaining minutes, and the match ended all square, extending Egypt's long wait for a maiden World Cup triumph.

The contest was closely fought throughout. Belgium enjoyed 53 percent possession compared to Egypt's 47 percent, while both teams registered three shots on target. The scoreline ultimately reflected the balance of play, with honours even at the final whistle.
