Saudi Arabia frustrated Uruguay with a spirited performance to earn a 1-1 draw in their opening Group H match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The result continued a trend in the tournament that has seen several favorites, including Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain, fail to win their first matches.

Unlike their famous upset of Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, Saudi Arabia did not claim another giant-killing victory this time. However, the Green Falcons produced a disciplined display to secure a valuable point against the South American side.

Saudi Arabia took the lead in the 41st minute through defender Abdullah Al Amri. The goal came from a corner kick after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to properly deal with a header from Mohammed Kanno. Al Amri reacted quickest to the loose ball and fired it into the net.

Uruguay dominated possession after the break and spent much of the second half pressing for an equalizer. The Saudis were forced deep into their own half as the two-time world champions searched desperately for a way back into the match.

The equalizer finally arrived in the 80th minute. In a move similar to Saudi Arabia's goal, a header from Vinas was not fully cleared by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais. The rebound fell kindly to Marcos Araujo, who smashed a powerful shot into the net from inside the penalty area.

Al Owais then emerged as Saudi Arabia’s hero, producing several outstanding saves to deny Nicolas De La Cruz, captain Federico Valverde and Brian Rodriguez in the closing stages.

The draw leaves both teams with one point, although Saudi Arabia are likely to be happier with the outcome. A victory would have put Uruguay in a strong position to top the group after the opening round of matches.

Earlier, Cape Verde made history by holding Spain to a goalless draw. As a result, all four teams in Group H are level on one point after their opening fixtures. Uruguay currently sit above Spain on goal difference, while the race for qualification remains wide open.
