Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is fit and ready to start in the team's opening FIFA World Cup match against Curaçao.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on the eve of the game, Nagelsmann said all players were available for selection despite concerns over Neuer's recent calf injury.
“Everyone is fit and Manu will start,” the German coach said.
Neuer, now 40, was a key member of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad. However, he has not represented the national team since Germany’s 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Spain at UEFA Euro 2024.
The experienced goalkeeper agreed to return to international duty following injuries to other German goalkeepers. He enjoyed an impressive spring campaign at club level, although he missed the DFB-Pokal final in May because of injury.
If selected as expected, Neuer will make his first appearance for Germany in nearly two years.
Despite Germany entering the match as favorites, Nagelsmann warned against underestimating Curaçao.
“Curaçao’s players are well trained and can play in this tournament without any pressure, which always makes an opponent dangerous,” he said. “You never win a match simply because you are the favorite. We will only win if we deliver a near-perfect performance.”
Germany will begin their World Cup campaign against Curaçao hoping to make a strong start, with Neuer’s return providing a significant boost to the squad.
