Hollywood star Tom Cruise is set to receive a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to cinema. The American Film Institute (AFI) will present him with its 52nd Life Achievement Award at a special ceremony to be held on April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The announcement was made by the AFI’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday (October 21). Cruise, the star of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise, is being honored in recognition of his contributions to cinema and his long-standing career as both an actor and a producer.
In a statement, Kathleen Kennedy, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, remarked that Tom Cruise is a globally recognized star who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to every project he undertakes, whether as an actor or a producer. His profound belief in the power of cinema—and its capacity to bring people together—is particularly commendable. This passion has made him an exceptional ambassador for American film across the globe.
With a career spanning over five decades in acting and producing, Tom Cruise stands as one of the world’s most recognizable film stars. His notable works include ‘Top Gun’, ‘Rain Man’, ‘A Few Good Men’, ‘Jerry Maguire’, ‘Minority Report’, ‘The Last Samurai’, and the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series.
Cruise has earned Academy Award (Oscar) nominations for Best Actor for his performances in ‘Born on the Fourth of July’ and ‘Jerry Maguire’, and a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for ‘Magnolia’. He also received a nomination for Best Picture as a producer of the 2022 film ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. In 2025, he was presented with an Honorary Oscar at the Academy’s Governors Awards in recognition of his contributions to cinema.
Previous recipients of this AFI honor include stars such as Eddie Murphy, Nicole Kidman, Julie Andrews, Denzel Washington, and George Clooney. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise recently starred in the film *Digger*. In it, he portrays Digger Rockwell—a wealthy and eccentric oil tycoon who becomes embroiled in a disaster related to oil extraction in Greenland.
The film explores themes such as corporate greed, climate change, and the manipulation of narratives. However, two weeks after its release, the film had grossed $14.4 million in North America and $35.3 million globally. According to AFP, this big-budget production is projected to incur a loss of approximately $245 million.
