Nepal declares Genji protest victims as ’martyrs’

After the bloody Genji protests, the impasse over government formation has ended in Nepal. Sushila Karki took charge as the interim Prime Minister on Sunday. Before taking charge at Singha Darbar, she paid tribute at the Martyrs' Memorial in Linechaur in the morning.

On the day of taking charge, she announced compensation to the families of those killed in the Genji protests. According to the government's decision, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be given to each deceased family. At the same time, the deceased have been declared 'martyrs'.

The government also said that free medical treatment has been provided to 134 protesters and 57 police personnel injured in the protests. In addition, the cabinet has ordered a detailed report on the damage caused during the protests.

According to the official count, a total of 72 people have died in the protests so far. Of these, 59 are protesters, 10 prisoners and 3 police personnel.
