An earthquake was felt in 6 countries in South Asia, including Bangladesh and India. The earthquake struck at around 5:11 pm on Sunday (September 14).

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake was felt in Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan. Its magnitude was 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was Dhekiyajuli in Assam, India.

Scientists analyzing the geological position of the India and Burma plates and Bangladesh say that a major earthquake can strike at any time. A major earthquake around the capital Dhaka will cause extensive damage to the Dhaka metropolis.

Bangladesh Open University Vice Chancellor Professor Syed Humayun Akhtar said that even if a magnitude 7 earthquake hits Dhaka, our preparations, building structures, and dense population could cause a major disaster.
