A powerful storm, named 'Babet', has swept across the United Kingdom, bringing with it fierce winds, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding. The storm has caused at least two deaths and severely disrupted daily life. By Sunday night (October 25), approximately 90,000 households across the country were left without electricity.
The fatalities occurred when trees fell in various locations during the storm. Police reported that a 60-year-old man died in the Dumfries area of Scotland after being trapped under an uprooted tree. Meanwhile, in North London, a young man in his twenties lost his life when a tree fell onto his moving vehicle. Additionally, two women were hospitalized after being struck by falling trees.
The storm’s impact was most severe in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Northern England, where wind speeds reached up to 135 kilometers per hour. In some parts of Scotland, the rainfall recorded over the past two days amounted to nearly one-third of the total monthly average.
Persistent rain has raised concerns about potential flooding in rivers and low-lying areas. In response, environmental agencies in England, Scotland, and Wales have issued multiple flood warnings for their respective regions.
The storm and the resulting fallen trees have caused significant disruption to the UK’s road and rail networks. Several major roads in Scotland have been closed, and train services have been temporarily suspended. Adverse weather conditions have also forced the cancellation or diversion of flights at several airports.
The meteorological office has indicated that while conditions may ease slightly on Monday (October 26), heavy rain and strong winds are expected to return on Tuesday. Consequently, fresh weather warnings remain in effect for various parts of Scotland and Northern England.
