US President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to stop attacks on energy facilities. In a post on social media on Sunday (October 11), he said the ceasefire would take effect immediately. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had not yet received details of the agreement from the US. There was no immediate comment from Moscow.
The announcement came after days of Trump's pressure to end Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil facilities, a move he has blamed on a surge in diesel prices in the United States, Reuters reported. The fuel price hike has also put political pressure on his Republican party ahead of next month's US midterm elections.
On Sunday, Trump wrote on his social media account Truth Social, "An energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine is taking effect immediately. Both sides have agreed to it. Do not break it!"
Earlier on Saturday, Trump issued a stern warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop attacking Russian oil facilities. He also called for Ukraine to hold new elections and elect a leader who is willing to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump accused Zelensky of missing several opportunities to negotiate with Moscow.
The United States has increased pressure on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy facilities, a source familiar with the matter said. The source claimed that Washington has threatened to stop intelligence sharing with Ukraine and stop arms procurement assistance under the Priority Ukrainian Requirements List (PURL) system if the attacks do not stop. The Financial Times previously reported on this.
The source also said Zelensky is talking to European leaders to defuse tensions with Trump. The White House had no immediate comment on the matter.
