Iranian plane lands in China despite sanctions

An Iranian Mahan Air passenger plane has landed in China amid the threat of US sanctions, AFP reported on Wednesday (September 23) citing flight tracking company FlightRadar24.

According to reports, a Mahan Air flight departing from Tehran landed in Guangzhou, China. However, the official website of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport did not provide any information about the flight's landing.

The news of the plane landing in China comes as the United States has warned of tough measures against Iran's aviation sector.US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant warned this week that countries that provide "landing services" to Iranian aircraft would be "thrown out of the dollar system," but he did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, Iran's Civil Aviation Authority said flights from Tehran to Baghdad, Muscat and Ankara will be canceled starting Wednesday.

Mahan Air has been subject to US sanctions before, so the Iranian plane's landing in China amid a new US warning has sparked renewed discussions about air travel and sanctions enforcement between the two countries.
