The damage and loss of life from the devastating twin earthquakes that hit Venezuela is increasing by leaps and bounds. According to the latest information provided by the president of the country's national parliament, the death toll has risen to 1,430. In addition, at least 3,238 people have been confirmed injured in this catastrophic event. 68,900 people are still missing.
Meanwhile, the UN Migration Agency (IOM) said based on initial estimates, about 6.76 million people in the country could be affected by last Wednesday's devastating earthquake.
According to the IOM's forecast, this huge population affected includes about 2 million people in the capital Caracas alone. The severity of the humanitarian crisis is becoming clearer as the damage assessment process is still ongoing. Citing initial satellite analysis, the agency said that about 31.5 thousand buildings in the coastal city of Catia la Mar have already been damaged.
“The first hours and days after a disaster are crucial, shaping everything that follows,” said IOM Director-General Amy Pope.
IOM is rapidly scaling up its relief and rescue operations in response to the disaster. Emergency relief supplies already stockpiled in Caracas have already begun to be distributed to the most affected areas. It is working with the Venezuelan government and other partners to ensure emergency shelter, essential goods and protection. Internal displacement is expected to increase dramatically as many people flee their homes and seek safety.
Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on Wednesday, just 39 seconds apart, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The 7.5-magnitude quake struck 23km southeast of the city of Yumare in Yaracuy state, and the 7.2-magnitude quake struck 23.9km northeast of San Felipe in the same state. The United Nations has said that rapid and coordinated action by the international community is essential to stand by the Venezuelan people and provide life-saving assistance in the difficult days and months ahead.
