Needing a victory to overtake Colombia at the summit, Portugal created several chances but failed to find a breakthrough against a resilient Colombian defence in Miami.

The draw means Colombia will face Ghana in the Round of 32, while Portugal have been handed a difficult knockout tie against Croatia.

The match burst into life almost immediately. Colombia threatened in the second minute when Luis Diaz's deflected effort fell kindly to Jhon Cordoba, but the striker headed over the crossbar from close range.

Cordoba was denied again in the 17th minute after breaking through the Portuguese backline, only for goalkeeper Diogo Costa to produce an excellent save.

Five minutes later, Colombia came close once more, but Nuno Mendes made a crucial goal-line clearance to keep the scores level.

Portugal gradually grew into the contest before half-time. In the 40th minute, Bruno Fernandes forced veteran Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas into an impressive save with a powerful strike.

Moments later, Joao Felix volleyed narrowly over the crossbar before James Rodriguez tested Costa with a curling effort in first-half stoppage time, leaving the teams deadlocked at the break.

The attacking intensity continued after the restart.

Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had broken the deadlock in the 60th minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Colombia then enjoyed their best spell of the second half. In the 66th minute, John Arias forced another fine save from Costa with a curling effort as Portugal came under sustained pressure.

The game's biggest moment arrived in stoppage time.

Colombia believed they had snatched a dramatic winner when Davinson Sanchez headed home from a corner in the 91st minute, sparking wild celebrations. However, the assistant referee immediately raised the offside flag.

A subsequent VAR review confirmed that Sanchez's toe was marginally ahead of the last Portuguese defender, and the goal was disallowed.

Colombia pushed for one final chance, but Daniel Munoz was denied late on as Portugal held firm to secure the point they needed.

The stalemate ensured Colombia finished top of Group K, while Portugal progressed as runners-up, setting up an intriguing Round of 32 meeting with Croatia.
